What is Doordarshan?

Doordarshan

Doordarshan located at Mandi House Copernicus Marg, New Delhi 110001, is the national television service of the country. It is one the largest terrestrial networks on earth. Television broadcasting has tremendous significance in a developing nation like ours, with low literacy rate and cultural and linguistic diversities. As mentioned above, television transmission started in India way back in 1959.

After a period spanning some 16 years, in 1975-76, satellite technology cut its teeth in India under Satellite Instructional Television Experiment or SITE programme. Television was delinked from All India Radio to form an independent organisation called 'Doordarshan' in 1976. Further, a regular satellite link between Delhi and other transmitters was established in 1982, the year which also saw introduction of colour transmission by the Doordavshan.
