Settings counselling
Counselling is performed in a variety of settings, the most important of which will be described briefly. Elementary school counsellor deploy primarily developmental and crisis interventions with students. Consult with teachers, parents and administrators, and coordinate counselling services. In addition to the duties of the elementary school counsellor, the secondary school counsellor provides personal, social, vocational and academic counselling. School counsellor usually possesses, as a minimum a master's degree in counselling or related area. The duties of college and university counsellors include therapy, programme development, programme administration, programme evaluation, consultation, teaching, and assessment.
College and university settings stress remedial as well as preventative and developmental services. Most counsellors in these setting possess a doctoral degree, although a few institutions require only a master's degree. Many counsellors work in public, quasi-public, or governmental agencies and have titles such as community mental health counsellor, community agency counsellor, and certified clinical mental health counsellor and possess doctoral or master's level training. The duties of these counsellors depend greatly on the type of agency. Counsellors may also choose to practise privately on a fee for service basis. Most areas require licence at the doctoral level to practice privately (See Counsellor Credentialing).
