Satellite TV Services

The experimental satellite TV service was operated in the year 1975-76, utilizing ATS-6 satellite. The year 1982 witnessed the introduction of regular satellite services to enable networking of various TV transmitters in the country, using INSAT satellite. Entertainment oriented METRO channel is the Doordarshan's answer to the mushrooming private satellite TV channels.

In the aftermath of the Gulf war in the early 90s, a good number of Satellite channels started operating in India posing serious challenges to the national channel of India. However, Doordarshan, with its largest reach in viewership, lost no time in rescheduling, restructuring as well as innovating its programmes.
