Increasingly there is recognition that behaviour is a function of the environment as well as the person. Typically, counsellors intervene directly with the client, either individually or in groups. It has been suggested that in an increasingly complex world, counsellors will need to focus on changing the environments that produce dysfunction. To some extent, this is being attempted by community counsellors. Family counsellors and some behaviourists (for instance, those who seek to modify classroom environments).
