Registrar of Newspapers for India
Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI), commonly known as the Press Registrar, was set up on July 1,1956. The Press Registrar is the statutory authority for the collection of statistics regarding the press in the country under the Press Registration of Books (Amendment) Act, 1955. Under the Press Registrar, a central agency has been created to maintain a register of newspapers containing prescribed particulars about every newspaper in India. The office allocates newsprint to newspapers and periodicals as per Governments policy and certifies essentiality the import of printing machinery and allied equipment required by newspapers. .

As per the annual report for the year 2002-3, total number of registered newspapers/periodicals stood at 55780 as on 31st March, 2003, with 5966 dailies, 358 tri/bi-weeklies, 19631 weeklies, 7356 fort-nightlies, 16109 monthlies, 3919 quarterlies, 516 annuals and 1925 of other periodicity.
Newspapers were registered in English and 18 principal languages listed in the VTIIth Schedule of the Constitution. Kashmiri is the only language which did not have a daily newspaper while the state of Orissa earned the distinction of publishing newspapers in all the 18 languages of India. Few foreign language newspapers are also registered with the RNI.
