Frequency Modulation (FM) Radio
FM or Frequency Modulation broadcasting is now that unfamiliar as it used to be two decades ago. Years 1977 and 1992 saw the introduction of FM broadcasts in Chennai and Jalandhar respectively. In 1993, with the leasing out of time slots to private firms, FM radio started rising to the popularity charts. In FM broadcast, the reception is normally free from atmospheric noise and electric interference. Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Bangalore are the hot beds of FM service. Of late, a lot many private radio stations have sprung up to provide air service through frequency modulation. Radio Mirchi, Radio City, Radiostar, FM Rainbow, Red FM, Radio Midday, are to name a few. Presently, there are 21 FM stations are operating in 12 cities in the country. With foreign players such as Virgin Group etc., evincing interest in setting up joint ventures in India, a brighter future certainly awaits the FM radio industry.
